The Power of a Hug

child hugDo you remember as a young child, the safety of an embrace from someone you loved and trusted? There is power in that physical act. It brings reassurance to the relationship. It is a sign of security and trust.

It appears that a hug is a nearly universal act. Primates and Humans, from the earliest age, hold on to their protectors and snuggle into their waiting arms. Throughout history, parents have cradled their children. For all time, children have needed the embrace of their parents. Research has proven that skin-to-skin contact provides a reassurance and warmth that we can achieve in no other way. But there are lots of reasons we hug.

Those who shut their ears to the cries of the poor
will be ignored in their own time of need. – Prov. 21:13 (NLT)

In his recent article in The Telegraph, writer Stephen King notes, “The Syrian refugee crisis may prove to be no more than a dress rehearsal for what may happen in coming decades.”

Hundreds of boats and rafts used by refugees to cross the Mediterranean in 2016 are stacked at the port / processing center of Pozzallo, Sicily.

The article goes on to predict a major shift in the world demographics as the population of Continental Africa explodes and ongoing civil war and a desire for a better life drives the human migratory patterns of the earth.

Clubhouse Rules

We were refugees once, not so very long ago. We immigrated to this land in the 1600’s, as refugees of religious persecution, seeking the right to freely pursue our beliefs: A noble goal, for sure, but this refugee story is less than noble.

We sought freedom. We sought safety. We longed for a place to call our own. And soon we were no longer visitors. Soon we owned the clubhouse and we now could made the rules.

We expanded our reach and made our way across the land, driving the Native Americans ahead of us; either killing them systematically or forcing them to inhabit desolate wilderness and forsake their way of life.

Peaceful Planet

harmony-1006179_1920.pngIs a Peaceful Plant possible? Is it a lofty goal? Is it unrealistic? Is it foolishness? Is it a lost cause?

Some may answer, Yes. Give up. It’s a fool’s errand. There’s no point in moving forward or trying to change the course of human history. They’ll always hate one another and there will forever be war, strife, and hatred. Whether Hebrew and Arab. Black and White. Islam and Christian. The reality is the same. There is no point in trying.

Some may answer, No. Never give up. Only a fool would stop. The goal of peace is never one to forsake. Perhaps, with a little more effort and the right set of circumstances we might uncover the answer to war, strife, and hatred. Whether Sunni or Shiiat. Democrat or Republican. Russian or American. There is every point in trying. Why wouldn’t make every effort to save humanity from itself? For our nation? For our state? For our children? For our future?

If you chose the first option, you are free and clear. You’ve forsaken any obligation you might have to saving the human race from itself. No further action is required. The world will continue to spin out of control with violence and bloodshed the final result, no thanks to you.

If you chose the second option, if you see light at the end of the very dark tunnel, then a series of questions must be asked, “What are you doing to change it? What conversations are you having? What relationships are you building? What answers are you seeking? What difference are you making?”

Perhaps the change will come slow but it must begin…and soon. Will you help change the world? Will you help make a peaceful planet?
